3 mistakes that can be avoided to prevent accidents in Plant using Safety Gas measuring Instruments

The gas measuring instruments are installed at various locations in a plant i.e., safety gas leakage monitoring, confined space, area surveillance, etc.

A lot of the things are dependent on the measurement of the safety gas detectors.
The safety gas detectors are used to save assets and valuable resources, Occupational safety, and are just not merely a requirement of a regulatory or statutory body.

The major accidents happen related to the Safety gas monitoring system due to several reasons some of which are listed below. We have summarized the most common 3 mistakes to prevent accidents at the workplace having potential hazards due to Toxic or combustible gas.

LACK OF AWARENESS OF THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE GAS DETECTION SYSTEM TO THE WORKING STAFF.

There are several types of sensors, technology, and models available in the market for gas detection systems. The concerned employee must be aware of the functionality, and how to operate it in adverse conditions. The correct placement or installation of the equipment is equally important. Sometimes improper alarms set on the device cause fatal accidents.

IGNORANCE IN REGULAR MAINTENANCE OF GAS DETECTION SYSTEM.

Several times a root cause in Industrial accidents reveals ignorance in regular maintenance of gas detection systems. The gas detection system must be regularly checked for its functionality as per the procedure defined by the manufacturer. The portable gas detector which is used to detect oxygen levels in confined spaces must be checked with a “bump test” or “function check” before using it. Regularly ensure proper functionality of portable or fix gas detectors. As per the guidelines by OSHA in SHIB 09-30-2013 for the use of portable gas detectors states “A bump test . . . or calibration check of portable gas monitors should be conducted before each day's use by the manufacturer's instructions." If an instrument fails a bump test or a calibration check, the operator should perform a full calibration on it before using it. If the instrument fails the full calibration, the employer should remove it from service. Contact the manufacturer for assistance or service.”.

The Calibration of a gas detector is a process that is done by comparing it with the known concentration of gas. The accurate and reliable results depend on the skill level and competency of calibration staff, environment conditions during calibration, awareness of standard requirements, quality of master equipment used, etc. The measurement results can be ensured by calibrating from Accredited Calibration Laboratory as per ISO/IEC 17025 standard. ISO/IEC 17025 standard elaborates requirements of calibration laboratories along with an assessment of laboratory staff to ensure competency.
